Defense? Defend What?

Um. What if we can't afford it?

I know the last time I was unemployed, the last thing I was thinking about was stocking up on weapons. That's sort of where we're at.

I got it from FN:

The White House will shelve Bush administration plans to build a missile-defense system in Poland and the Czech Republic, according to people familiar with the matter, a move likely to cheer Moscow and roil the security debate in Europe.

The U.S. will base its decision on a determination that Iran's long-range missile program has not progressed as rapidly as previously estimated, reducing the threat to the continental U.S. and major European capitals, according to current and former U.S. officials.

The findings, expected to be completed as early as next week following a 60-day review ordered by President Barack Obama, would be a major reversal from the Bush administration, which pushed aggressively to begin construction of the Eastern European system before leaving office in January.

The Bush administration proposed the European-based system to counter the perceived threat of Iran developing a nuclear weapon that could be placed atop its increasingly sophisticated missiles. There is widespread disagreement over the progress of Iran's nuclear program toward developing such a weapon, but miniaturizing nuclear weapons for use on long-range missiles is one of the most difficult technological hurdles for an aspiring nuclear nation.

Skeptical CPA has covered our nuclear weaknesses repeatedly and understands the kind of military situation we are in at the moment. I stick with Fedwatching so let him tell you about that. Don't ask me to pronounce nuclear because I have some leftover Midwestern words like bagel and that.

As always, the best part is the comments. Even on Skeptical CPA:

Wrong again, IA, you rabid old probably-never-served-in-the-military hawk.

How many times over do we have to be able to destroy the world to have a credible nuclear deterrent? Fifty? A hundred? Ten thousand?

Holy crap... from Feith's Wikipedia entry...

"In February 2007, the Pentagon's inspector general issued a report that concluded that Feith's office "developed, produced, and then disseminated alternative intelligence assessments on the Iraq and al Qaida relationship, which included some conclusions that were inconsistent with the consensus of the Intelligence Community, to senior decision-makers."

The report found that these actions were "inappropriate" though not "illegal." Senator Carl Levin, Chair of the Senate Armed Services Committee, stated that "The bottom line is that intelligence relating to the Iraq-al-Qaeda relationship was manipulated by high-ranking officials in the Department of Defense to support the administration's decision to invade Iraq.

The inspector general's report is a devastating condemnation of inappropriate activities in the DOD policy office that helped take this nation to war."[7]

At Senator Levin's insistence, on April 6, 2007, the Pentagon's Inspector General's Report was declassified and released to the public.[8]"

What is this guy still doing hawking public policy???

Welcome to the real world of intelligence policy and analysis. How do you know the inspector general's (IG) report wasn't faked? Having seen some, I would never trust say, an SEC IG's report. Why should you trust this one? The CIA has "slanted" analysis to suit policy for decades. Levin's entitled to his opinion. By the way, I have always opposed our Iraq adventure.

Um, burn whoever posted a link to a Wikipedia article. I hope you don't do that again.

The only other person I know who can insult Obama with such transparent but not quite offensive awesomeness is this guy. Sadly that guy comes from this place.

Border? What border? I think we used to have one. My "Border Patrol" t-shirt will be worth bazillions on Ebay some day.

Again, this isn't my area. But somehow if you look hard enough you realize that all of it is TBTF and therefore too interconnected.

This goes out to you, TPTB. We totally get it.

Where was this filmed? Washington?

Hey can someone tell me if an Iraqi dude throwing a shoe at ex President Bush is racist? I'm horribly confused now.

Disclaimer: I can't stand Bush either.

It's totally legit to post a link to a wikipedia article.... if you're the principal author of said article. ;)

I'm pretty sure Krupo can get away with any and everything he wants, let's not give the kiddies the wrong idea, k? :)
