Health Care "Reform" Puts the IRS in Charge of Your Health Using Magic Math

Saturday, March 20, 2010 , , , , 16 Comments

The Wicked Witch of the Far Left is convinced that this time, she cannot be defeated. Obama's grand health care plan will become the rule of law, the IRS will be in charge of the whole shebang and maybe if they can carry a few zeroes Medicare will magically fill the giant unfunded liability hole that's been chewing at it like a cancer since the bureaucrats realized they could loot the pot and leave only IOUs.

We're not exactly doomed but might as well be. Good luck with your little scheme, Nancy, you'll need it.

First off, let's talk CBO numbers. They're made-up and the CBO admits as much. That's cool, we're used to made-up government numbers (case in point, the 537 bazillion jobs saved or created by ARRA) but if Obama's healthcare overhaul were, say, a publicly traded company I would advise its cheerleaders to carefully comb the prospectus before putting all their eggs in that basket. Or unzipping in the doctor's office.

Human Events:

Democrats began leaking preliminary Congressional Budget Office numbers yesterday in an effort to build some sort of momentum for their dead man walking health care bill. And the President has postponed his trip to Asia. Again. If President Obama’s appearance on Fox News last night wasn’t enough to convince you that Democrats still don’t have the votes to pass their government takeover of health care, the scandalization of the CBO office should do the trick.

The CBO was forced into releasing preliminary numbers yesterday when House leaders began making premature pronouncements. To its credit, the CBO did put this disclaimer on the front page of its preliminary report:

“Although CBO completed a preliminary review of legislative language prior to its release, the agency has not thoroughly examined the reconciliation proposal to verify its consistency with the previous draft; This estimate is therefore preliminary, pending a review of the language of the reconciliation proposal, as well as further review and refinement of the budgetary projections.”

Let's go back to the IRS thing.

Via Rep. Dave Camp's website (R-MI):

Today, Rep. Dave Camp and Ways and Means Republicans released a new report detailing how the Democrats’ health care bill vastly expands the responsibilities of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and strengthens the heavy hand of the IRS in dealing with taxpayers.

Highlights of report, which is entitled “The Wrong Prescription: Democrats’ Health Overhaul Dangerously Expands IRS Authority,” include:

* IRS agents verify if you have “acceptable” health care coverage;
* IRS has the authority to fine you up to $2,250 or 2 percent of your income (whichever is greater) for failure to prove that you have purchased “minimum essential coverage;”
* IRS can confiscate your tax refund;
* IRS audits are likely to increase;
* IRS will need up to $10 billion to administer the new health care program this decade;
* IRS may need to hire as many as 16,500 additional auditors, agents and other employees to investigate and collect billions in new taxes from Americans; and
* Nearly half of all these new individual mandate taxes will be paid by Americans earning less than 300 percent of poverty ($66,150 for a family of four.)

The Republicans noted that despite all these new mandates on Americans, the Democrats prohibit the IRS from imposing these same taxes and penalties on illegal immigrants.

Here's the full report

Now why on Earth would the IRS be put in charge of this and more importantly why would we be required to pay in to fund the harassment?

Excellent plan, Obama, excellent plan. I'll take my chances with the native medicine of Nicaragua (Tylenol and antibiotics, in case you aren't hip) when I finally get smart, pack my shit, and jump my happy American ass the hell off this sinking ship. God Bless America!

If I was gullible, I would think that official looking document came the Ways and Means Committee.

How odd that the very official looking pdf doesn't actually appear on the House Ways and Means website.

Good thing I'm not gullible.

In about 1979, the IRS was put in charge of the "windfall profits tax" (WPT). It was a fiasco. In about 1982, the WPT was repealed. Obamacare could be as big a fiasco at the WPT. I remember the IRS complaining it had to divert agents to WPT audits from income tax audits. Even the IRS could see the WPT would be a fiasco.

does this mean the IRS won't have enough manpower to go demanding their 4 cents in back taxes?

Enter income. Lines 7 to 22 relate to your salary, wages and tips from the previous calendar year. Most of this information can be copied directly from a W-2 or 1099, though if you had more than one source of income, these will need to be combined first with a calculator. Rounding to the nearest dollar is allowed, but if you round once, you must round in the same way throughout.

rounding error created his Frankenstein? that's a helluva "gotcha"

But there is another reason to oppose Obamacare; the bill being debated in the House includes special payoffs for trial lawyers that will encourage wasteful litigation against doctors and increase the overall costs of health care for patients.

Frivolous medical malpractice lawsuits already cost Americans billions of dollars annually.

According to the Harvard School of Public Health, 40% of medical malpractice suits filed in the U.S. are “without merit.” These predatory suits amount to legalized extortion and require doctors to purchase malpractice insurance at great expense. A Department of Health and Human Services study found that unlimited excessive damages add between $70 billion and $126 billion annually to health-care costs.

The requirement for drivers to purchase minimum liablity auto insurance coverage has not created an environment where all drivers actually have minimum liability auto insurance.

gee, thanks for the reality check, Sunshine...

Forcing Americans to pay income taxes and threatening them with jail time hasn't exactly caused 100% compliance with tax laws either. Just sayin...

If everyone who can and does "call bullshit" leaves then there is no more America. A democratic republic has to have friction and argument. It's healthy (and also kind of entertaining).

Plan: leave country
renounce citizenship
do some Rio Grande swimmin'
and get back in
start life anew as an
illegal immigrant

-Keep your eyes on the Prize, They want 401k, IRA, & Roth account. When they make it a 'Public Option' to purchase Treasuries.

-You can't transfer account balances if the Option doesn't exist in the account.

The best income producing arm of the government is the IRS. Each dollar spent on the salary of one of its employees brings back thousands. The hiring of 16,500 new agents will pump billions into the vaults of the treasury department. They will hunt down deadbeats who expect to use the resources of the nation for free.

long stretch of rope, I'd like you to meet donkey neck. we'll see how it plays out but this might well have been the Dems committing political suicide. Interesting political season.

The government will go so broke trying to pay all the subsidies it's promised that, like Massachusetts and Tennessee, it will soon begin culling people from the health care rolls and telling them they're exempt from buying coverage. When you don't allow the insurers to say no, then government has to do so, and it will. The only reform in this health care reform is higher prices for lesser coverage and scarcer health care.

(love the name btw) Exactly. What's funny is that the government (obviously Congress, more specifically) has totally forgotten that China cut our credit card and we don't have anyone to fund this latest "entitlement".

It seems many Americans are happy living life attached to the great government teat.
