A Monkey in Bureaucrat's Clothing

Tom Baugh, author of Starving the Monkeys: Fight Back Smarter, has a bit of wisdom for you:

To thrive in any system, you must first recognize the reality of that system, and then act accordingly in order to manipulate its energy to your own purpose. As I have said before, we too often project our own individual decency and honesty onto the current system, and then delude ourselves into thinking that the actors within it are merely misguided, so thwarting its noble purpose. To thrive in this system and not be perpetually frustrated, or worse, you must accept the premise that our system is not fundamentally noble, but was specifically designed to feed a class of certain very wealthy people. Refuse to accept this fact, and I can't help you.

It's long and if you're short on attention, you won't be able to get through it, which is probably OK. If you can't get through one article, there's no way in hell you're going to figure out what lies ahead and your place in the big scheme of things.

Read it in its entirety. Now.

Well, the article is good, but the premise that Andy can get 5632 dollars from the fed as refund tells me the writer either does not do his own taxes or did not read the line about the refund cannot exceed the taxes paid in. If you calculate a refund of 60000 dollars and you only paid 400 you get 400.

Otherwise it is a well written article that challenges some of my perceptions.

Paul,

Please google "refundable tax credit."

Most of these "tax credits" for the poor are not actually tax credits, but welfare. You get cash back from the govt if they exceed your tax liability.

You must be referring to this:

Tax Year 2010 maximum credit:

$5,036 with two qualifying children
$3,050 with one qualifying child
$457 with no qualifying children
Requirements to Claim Credit
You must have a valid Social Security Number (SSN).
An Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) is not sufficient.
Your SSN card must not have "Not valid for employment" on it.
Your filing status must be single, head of household, qualifying widow(er), or married filing jointly.
You must be a U.S. citizen living in the U.S. more than half the year, or a resident alien for the entire year.
You cannot have foreign earned income.
Your investment income must be less than $3,100.
Your adjusted gross income fall within certain levels, which vary by filing status and the number of qualifying children:
Single, head of household, qualifying widow(er) filers:
Three or more qualifying children: the credit begins to phase out when earned income reaches $16,450 and is eliminated when it reaches $43,352.
Two qualifying children: the credit begins to phase out when earned income reaches $16,450 and is eliminated when it reaches $40,363.
One qualifying child: the credit begins to phase out when earned income reaches $16,450 and is eliminated when it reaches $35,535.
No qualifying children: the credit begins to phase out when earned income reaches $7,480 and is eliminated when it reaches $13,460.

Three or more qualifying children: the credit begins to phase out when earned income reaches $21,460 and is eliminated when it reaches $48,362.
Two qualifying children: the credit begins to phase out when earned income reaches $21,460 and is eliminated when it reaches $45,373.
One qualifying child: the credit begins to phase out when earned income reaches $21,460 and is eliminated when it reaches $40,545.
No qualifying children: the credit begins to phase out when earned income reaches $12,490 and is eliminated when it reaches $18,470.
You must have earned income.
You must not be the qualifying child of another person.
You must not be the dependent of another person.
You must be at least age 25, but under age 65.

I stand corrected.
